1. Low-Profile Battery Placement
The Boar’s aluminum frame has been completely custom designed in Canada by Surface 604. It’s been designed for maximum stiffness and minimum weight with clean, sexy lines. Most importantly, we’ve placed the battery (discreetly) in the down tube, keeping the centre of gravity low – lower than any other fat e-bike on the market. Add to that the short wheelbase and you’ve got an electric fat bike that rides like a Ducati motorcycle.
2. Ultra-quiet, High Torque Bafang Geared Hub Motor (250w or 350w)
The Boar comes equipped with Bafang’s next generation geared hub motor available in 250w or 350w (depending on local laws governing power ratings). These new motors are incredibly silent compared with anything else on the market, weigh less and are so low-profile it’s hard to tell it’s electric. Geared hub motors have the advantage over direct drive motors in that they deliver high torque and are resistant to overheating when running at lower RPM’s. This is well-suited to carrying heavy loads up hills at slower speeds.
3. SRAM ”1 x 10” Transmission
The Boar comes standard with a SRAM 10 speed transmission (also known as a “1 x 10”), providing ample range of gearing by one of the most respected names in bike components. The 1 x 10 transmission requires no front derailleur, making shifting even more simple and also eliminating the left hand shifter. The result is a cleaner looking handlebar that provides all the gearing a rider needs for steep hills.
4. Torque Sensing Battery Management System (BMS)
Power delivery to the motor is regulated by a torque sensor in the dropout hanger that senses how much torque you apply to the pedals; the harder you pedal, the more power the electric motor provides. The result is smooth power delivery and a natural ride much like a regular bike. The torque sensor has the added benefit of acting like a Battery Management System (BMS). The power going to the motor is instantly reduced when you reduce the torque and turns off completely when you stop pedalling. The effect is greatly reduced power consumption, longer range and longer battery life.
5. Tektro Hydraulic Disc Brakes
There really is no substitute for the stopping power, progressive feel and safety of hydraulic disk brakes and that’s why they come standard on every Boar fat bike. Carrying the heavy loads that the Boar for which the Boar was designed (thanks to optional front and rear cargo racks) makes the power of hydraulic all the more necessary. Winter riding? No problem. Tektro hydraulic brakes perform well in temperatures down to – 25 C (- 15 F) with some riders reporting high performance well below that temperature.
6. Suspension Fork Compatible (RST and RockShox)
RST Renegade Suspension Fork (available as an upgrade)
The Boar has been designed to be compatible with some fat tire suspension forks (RST and RockShox) for increased comfort and improved traction and handling in rough conditions,. The new Renegade fork from RST is available as an upgrade from the Surface604 website. The Renegade is compatible with the Boar’s 15mm thru-axle hub.
7. Custom Built Cargo Racks - Front & Rear
A major advantage that electric fat bikes like the Boar have over other bikes is how well-suited they are to carrying cargo. That’s thanks to the electric assist which reduces rider effort and the fat tires that provide ridiculous stability – it really has to be experienced to be believed.
That’s why we’ve designed custom front and rear racks for the Boar that will transform your bike into a pick-up truck (hybrid powered of course!). The front rack has attachments for saddlebags (panniers) and a large platform conveniently sized to fit a 12-pack of beer. The rear rack also fits standard saddlebags (panniers) and is rated for a whopping 42kg (100lbs) of cargo.
8. Fenders - Front & Rear
For many of us, all-season riding means riding in rain and snow. We’ve designed custom aluminum fenders for the Boar that makes riding a joy in all conditions. They come in black, they’re durable and are easy to install.
